Purpose
For what was the earth created? For what were we created? What are we doing here? What about everything in the world? We have so many awesome things! Presently, I am very grateful for the internet.
Our oldest daughter is currently serving as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Texas. She recently challenged us as a family to study the missionary Safeguards for Using Technology (it is available in the Gospel Library app that the Church puts out). So we started into the study of this little pamphlet.
What I really wanted to share from the Safeguards comes right from the Introduction. In the second paragraph it states: “This technology you are now receiving is intended to help you in your service to the Lord as He hastens His work. While this technology is meant to do good, Satan strives to use this technology to promote evil and to frustrate the work of the Lord. It is essential that you learn to use these tools according to the purpose for which they were created—to further the work of salvation.”
…the purpose for which they were created—to further the work of salvation…
That sounds pretty straightforward. The technology was created to further the work of salvation. As we read in Moses (from the Pearl of Great Price) 1:39 - For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
I guess it makes sense that the technology was created to further God's work on this earth. This means that I need to look for ways to use the technology resources that I have to also help further God's work. The eternal life of each one of God's children, that means you and me and all the rest of us (and all of those who have come before us) here on this planet, involves becoming like God is, fundamentally improving who we are, becoming the best child of God that we can possibly be.
In October of last year, Clark G. Gilbert (full talk available here) shared some great insights into our situation in this mortal sphere. He stated: "...we believe in the divine potential of all of God's children and in our ability to become something more in Christ. In the Lord's timing, it is not where we start but where we are headed that matters most...Jesus Christ sees divine potential no matter where we start. He saw it in the beggar, the sinner, and the infirm. He saw it in the fisherman, the tax collector, and even the zealot. No matter where we start, Christ considers what we do with what we are given."
Questions to ponder (and even more than ponder, to start finding answers to):
- What potential do you have in your life?
- Who can you become?
- How do you start?
- What is the road map for making that journey?
This is a journey I feel I have started and I invite you to join me. Let me know, via comments, what you think, how you'll begin, if you've already begun, how it is going for you. We can help and support one another!
